Clinical and Bacteriological Study of Shigellosis

Abstract
linical and Bateriological studies were cart led out on 31 cases of infants and children with shigellosis who were cared from September, 1984 to January, 1986 in our hospital.
The results were as follows :
1. The age distribution revealed the range between 4 month and 14 years with sex ratio of 15 of male and 16 of female, 1 : 1.
2. The peak incidence was noted in Autumn, although there were occurrence throughout the year, even in winter.
3. On bacteriological studies, Shigella boydii was isolated most frequenty C68%) and Shigella dysenteri and sonnei were the next(16%, 16%),But Shigella flexneri was not noted.
4. Major symptoms were blood tinged diarrhea, fever, vomiting and convulsion.
5. The leukocyte count in peripheral blood smear revealed increased in 17 case(54.8%, over than 10,000/mm¢¥ ) and decrease in 3 case(9.7%, less than 5, 000/mm¢¥ ).
6. The result of sensitivity test revealed that Amikacin was the most sensitive drug(71%) followed by Gentamicin(58.1%) and Cephalothin(51.6%). It also revealed the high prevalence of resistance to Ampicillin (100%) and Chloramphenicol (100%).
